Two new postgraduate scholarships are offered for entry in 2027: one in New Testament Studies and one in Systematic Theology or any other area of Christian theology. The purpose of these awards is to train outstanding Chinese scholars in biblical and theological studies at the University of Oxford.
Funding and duration
These private, independently administered scholarships cover course and college fees in full, plus an annual living costs grant matching at least the UKRI (Arts and Humanities Research Council) minimum doctoral stipend rate, which is £21,805 for 2026/27.
The scholarship will be awarded for up to four years (D.Phil. or, more commonly, M.Phil. plus D.Phil.), depending on satisfactory progress towards the doctorate.
Admission and selection
Each award is conditional upon successful admission and continuous matriculation for a master’s or doctoral degree in the Faculty of Theology and Religion at the University of Oxford. A separate application for admission must be made to the University and a suitable College.
Selection will be based on academic merit and additionally in the following order of priority:
- Citizens of China with a calling and demonstrable commitment to Christian teaching and scholarship in Mandarin. Students from Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan are welcome to apply.
- Applicants of Chinese descent with a calling and demonstrable commitment to Christian teaching and scholarship in China.
- Other applicants with a calling and demonstrable commitment to Christian teaching and scholarship in Mandarin-speaking seminaries and/or pastoring Mandarin-speaking churches in Asia.
The Selection Committee reserves the final decision to grant or not to grant a scholarship, even if a candidate meets the relevant criteria. The Committee is not required to disclose its reasons.
Application materials and deadline
Applicants should submit (1) a curriculum vitae of no more than two pages, and (2) a covering letter explaining their eligibility, preparation and purpose for doctoral study at Oxford, research interests, and plans for future scholarship and teaching in China or Mandarin-speaking seminaries elsewhere, or for pastoring Mandarin-speaking churches.
Email both documents as attachments to office@luxmundius.org before 12 noon UK time on 7 January 2027.
Candidates will be notified of the outcome before the end of March 2027.
